Sarasate and Mendelssohn with String Orchestra of the Rockies

Stephanie performs Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in D Minor and her own arrangement of Sarasate's "Zigeunerweisen."

Stephanie takes center stage as soloist with the SOR in the charming early Mendelssohn d minor concerto, as well as the dazzling “Ziguenerweisen” (Gypsy Airs) of Pablo de Sarasate. In February of 2019, the SOR’S performance of Stephanie’s fiery “A Fantasy about Carmen” brought down the house, and we are excited to have her come to Missoula as we close our 35th season of spectacular concerts. The program celebrates two other popular American musicians: the beloved George Gershwin in his “Lullaby” for strings and Oregonian composer and violist Kenji Bunch, whose jazzy “String Circles” closes our April concert. It’s a dazzling season finale, full of vibrancy and virtuosity! The concert begins at 7:30 pm in the recital hall of the Music Building at the University of Montana in Missoula.

Mozart and Beethoven

Great music at The Breakers

Born fourteen years after the great master, Beethoven lived in the shadow of Mozart. His father, Johann, intended for Beethoven to travel Europe and hobnob with royalty just as Amadeus had. He even insisted that Beethoven learn piano and viola so that he too would be able to perform and delight at a moment’s notice. But Beethoven’s mother died quite suddenly, and his father became an abusive alcoholic leaving the young Ludwig to care for his two brothers. After his father’s death, Beethoven left for Vienna where he quickly made a great name for himself. Nonetheless, Beethoven revered Mozart and paid homage through several works in which he directly quotes themes from "The Marriage of Figaro" and "The Magic Flute." Beethoven’s "Diabelli" variations are based on the opening notes of Leporello's aria Notte e giorno faticar from Don Giovanni. This concert plays upon the unique relationship between these two composers and their works.
